said the Queen, who had meanwhile been examining the roses.сказала Королева, которая тем временем осматривала розы.
“Off with their heads!”“Отрубить им головы!”
and the procession moved on,и процессия двинулась дальше,
three of the soldiers remaining behind to execute the unfortunate gardeners,а трое солдат остались позади, чтобы казнить несчастных садовников,
who ran to Alice for protection.которые бросились к Алисе за защитой.
“You shan’t be beheaded!”“Вам не отрубят головы!”

The three soldiers wandered about for a minute or two, looking for them,Трое солдат минуту или две бродили вокруг, разыскивая их,

shouted the Queen.крикнула Королева.

the soldiers shouted in reply.крикнули в ответ солдаты.
“That’s right!”“Вот и хорошо!”
shouted the Queen.крикнула Королева.
“Can you play croquet?”“Ты умеешь играть в крокет?”
The soldiers were silent, and looked at Alice,Солдаты молчали и посмотрели на Алису,
as the question was evidently meant for her.потому что вопрос, очевидно, был обращён к ней.
“Yes!”“Да!”
shouted Alice.крикнула Алиса.
“Come on, then!”“Тогда идём!”
roared the Queen,прорычала Королева,
and Alice joined the procession, wondering very much what would happen next.и Алиса присоединилась к процессии, с большим любопытством думая, что же будет дальше.
“It’s—it’s a very fine day!”“П-погода сегодня... очень хорошая!”
said a timid voice at her side.сказал робкий голос рядом с ней.

who was peeping anxiously into her face.который тревожно заглядывал ей в лицо.

“—where’s the Duchess?”“А где Герцогиня?”

said the Rabbit in a low, hurried tone. быстро и тихо сказал Кролик.
He looked anxiously over his shoulder as he spoke,Пока говорил, он тревожно оглянулся через плечо,
and then raised himself upon tiptoe,затем привстал на цыпочки,
put his mouth close to her ear,наклонился к самому её уху
and whispered и прошептал:
“She’s under sentence of execution.”“Её приговорили к казни.”
“What for?”“За что?”
said Alice.спросила Алиса.
“Did you say ‘What a pity!’?”“Ты сказала: «Какая жалость»?”
the Rabbit asked.спросил Кролик.
“No, I didn’t,”“Нет, не сказала,”
said Alice:ответила Алиса.
“I don’t think it’s at all a pity.“Я вовсе не думаю, что это жалость.
I said ‘What for?’”Я спросила: «За что?»”
“She boxed the Queen’s ears—”“Она отвесила Королеве пощёчину...”
the Rabbit began.начал Кролик.
Alice gave a little scream of laughter. Алиса тихонько рассмеялась.
“Oh, hush!”“Ой, тише!”
the Rabbit whispered in a frightened tone.испуганно прошептал Кролик.
“The Queen will hear you!“Королева услышит!
You see, she came rather late, Видишь ли, она пришла довольно поздно,
and the Queen said—”и Королева сказала...”
“Get to your places!”“По местам!”
shouted the Queen in a voice of thunder,громовым голосом крикнула Королева,
and people began running about in all directions,и все бросились бегать в разные стороны,
tumbling up against each other;натыкаясь друг на друга;
however, they got settled down in a minute or two,однако через минуту или две все заняли свои места,
and the game began.и игра началась.
Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet-ground in her life;Алисе показалось, что никогда в жизни она не видела такого странного крокетного поля;
it was all ridges and furrows;оно всё было в буграх и бороздах;
the balls were live hedgehogs,мячами служили живые ежи,
the mallets live flamingoes,молотками — живые фламинго,
and the soldiers had to double themselves upа солдаты должны были сгибаться
and to stand on their hands and feet,и становиться на руки и ноги,
to make the arches.изображая воротца.
The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo:Сначала главная трудность для Алисы заключалась в том, чтобы справиться со своим фламинго:
she succeeded in getting its body tucked away,ей удавалось довольно удобно прижимать его туловище к себе,
comfortably enough, under her arm,засунув под мышку,

Alice began to feel very uneasy:Алисе стало очень не по себе;
to be sure,правда,
she had not as yet had any dispute with the Queen,она пока ещё не успела поссориться с Королевой,
but she knew that it might happen any minute,но знала, что это может случиться в любую минуту.

They’re dreadfully fond of beheading people here;Здесь ужасно любят рубить головы;

She was looking about for some way of escape,Она оглядывалась в поисках возможности сбежать,

it puzzled her very much at first, сначала это её очень озадачило,

Alice waited till the eyes appeared, and then nodded.Алиса подождала, пока появятся глаза, и только тогда кивнула.
“It’s no use speaking to it,”“Нет смысла разговаривать с ним,”

In another minute the whole head appeared,Ещё через минуту появилась вся голова,
and then Alice put down her flamingo,и тогда Алиса опустила своего фламинго
and began an account of the game,и начала рассказывать о игре,

The Cat seemed to think that there was enough of it now in sight,Кот, по-видимому, решил, что его уже видно достаточно,
