The Queen’s Croquet-GroundКрокетная площадка Королевы
A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden:Возле входа в сад рос большой розовый куст:
the roses growing on it were white,розы на нём были белыми,
but there were three gardeners at it,но трое садовников
busily painting them red.усердно красили их в красный цвет.
Alice thought this a very curious thing,Алисе это показалось очень странным,
and she went nearer to watch them,и она подошла поближе, чтобы посмотреть,
and just as she came up to them she heard one of them say,и как раз когда подошла к ним, услышала, как один из них сказал:
“Look out now, Five!“Осторожнее, Пятёрка!
Don’t go splashing paint over me like that!”Не забрызгай меня краской!”
“I couldn’t help it,”“Я не виноват,”
said Five, in a sulky tone;сказал Пятёрка обиженным тоном,
“Seven jogged my elbow.”“Семёрка толкнул меня под локоть.”
On which Seven looked up and said,На это Семёрка поднял голову и сказал,
“That’s right, Five!“Вот именно, Пятёрка!
Always lay the blame on others!”Всегда сваливаешь вину на других!”
“You’d better not talk!”“Лучше бы тебе помолчать!”
said Five.сказал Пятёрка.
“I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!”“Я только вчера слышал, как Королева сказала, что тебя следует обезглавить!”
“What for?”“За что?”
said the one who had spoken first.спросил тот, кто заговорил первым.
“That’s none of your business, Two!”“Не твоё дело, Двойка!”
said Seven.сказал Семёрка.
“Yes, it is his business!”“Нет, его дело!”
said Five,сказал Пятёрка,
“and I’ll tell him“и я ему скажу,
—it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions.”это за то, что вместо лука ты принёс повару корни тюльпанов.”
Seven flung down his brush,Семёрка бросил кисть
and had just begun и уже начал:
“Well, of all the unjust things—”“Ну это уж самая настоящая несправедливость...”
when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice,как вдруг случайно заметил Алису,
as she stood watching them,стоявшую и наблюдавшую за ними,
and he checked himself suddenly:и тут же осёкся.
the others looked round also,Остальные тоже обернулись
and all of them bowed low.и все трое низко поклонились.
“Would you tell me,”“Не скажете ли вы мне,”
said Alice, a little timidly,немного робко спросила Алиса,
“why you are painting those roses?”“почему вы красите эти розы?”
Five and Seven said nothing,Пятёрка и Семёрка ничего не ответили,
but looked at Two.а посмотрели на Двойку.
Two began in a low voice,Двойка тихо начал:
“Why the fact is, you see, Miss,“Видите ли, мисс,
this here ought to have been a red rose-tree,дело в том, что здесь должна была быть красная роза,
and we put a white one in by mistake;а мы по ошибке посадили белую;
and if the Queen was to find it out,и если Королева это обнаружит,
we should all have our heads cut off, you know.нам всем отрубят головы.
So you see, Miss,Вот поэтому, мисс,
we’re doing our best, afore she comes, to—”мы стараемся изо всех сил, пока она не пришла...”
At this moment Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden,В этот момент Пятёрка, который тревожно смотрел через сад,
called out закричал:
“The Queen! The Queen!”“Королева! Королева!”
and the three gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon their faces.и трое садовников мгновенно растянулись ничком на земле.
There was a sound of many footsteps,Послышался топот множества ног,
and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen.и Алиса обернулась, с нетерпением желая увидеть Королеву.
First came ten soldiers carrying clubs;Сначала шли десять солдат с дубинками;
these were all shaped like the three gardeners,все они были такой же формы, как и трое садовников,
oblong and flat, with their hands and feet at the corners:плоские и прямоугольные, с руками и ногами по углам.
next the ten courtiers;Затем шли десять придворных;
these were ornamented all over with diamonds,они были сплошь украшены бубнами
and walked two and two, as the soldiers did.и шли по двое, как солдаты.
After these came the royal children;Следом появились королевские дети;
there were ten of them,их было десять,
and the little dears came jumping merrily along hand in hand, in couples:и милые малыши весело прыгали, держась за руки, по двое.
they were all ornamented with hearts.Все они были украшены червями.
Next came the guests,За ними шли гости,
mostly Kings and Queens,главным образом Короли и Королевы,
and among them Alice recognised the White Rabbit:и среди них Алиса узнала Белого Кролика.
it was talking in a hurried nervous manner,Он говорил быстро и нервно,
smiling at everything that was said,улыбаясь всему, что ему говорили,
and went by without noticing her.и прошёл мимо, даже не заметив её.
Then followed the Knave of Hearts,Затем появился Валет Червей,
carrying the King’s crown on a crimson velvet cushion;неся корону Короля на алой бархатной подушке;
and, last of all this grand procession,а последними во всей этой великолепной процессии
came THE KING AND QUEEN OF HEARTS.шли КОРОЛЬ И КОРОЛЕВА ЧЕРВЕЙ.
Alice was rather doubtful whether she oughtАлиса не была уверена,
not to lie down on her face like the three gardeners,не следует ли и ей лечь ничком, как троим садовникам,
but she could not remember ever having heard of such a rule at processions;но она не могла припомнить, чтобы когда-нибудь слышала о таком правиле на процессиях.
“and besides,“Да и потом,
what would be the use of a procession,”какой смысл в процессии,”
thought she,подумала она,
“if people had all to lie down upon their faces,“если все будут лежать лицом вниз
so that they couldn’t see it?”и ничего не смогут увидеть?”
So she stood still where she was, and waited.Поэтому она осталась стоять на месте и ждать.
When the procession came opposite to Alice,Когда процессия поравнялась с Алисой,
they all stopped and looked at her,все остановились и посмотрели на неё,
and the Queen said severely а Королева строго сказала:
“Who is this?”“Кто это?”
She said it to the Knave of Hearts,Она сказала это Валету Червей,
who only bowed and smiled in reply.который в ответ только поклонился и улыбнулся.
“Idiot!”“Болван!”
said the Queen,сказала Королева,
tossing her head impatiently;нетерпеливо вскинув голову,
and, turning to Alice, she went on,а затем, повернувшись к Алисе, продолжила:
“What’s your name, child?”“Как тебя зовут, дитя?”
“My name is Alice,“Меня зовут Алиса,
so please your Majesty,”если будет угодно Вашему Величеству,”
said Alice very politely;очень вежливо ответила Алиса;
but she added, to herself,но про себя добавила,
“Why,“Подумаешь,
they’re only a pack of cards, after all.это ведь всего лишь колода карт.
I needn’t be afraid of them!”Мне вовсе не нужно их бояться!”
“And who are these?”“А это кто?”
said the Queen,сказала Королева,
pointing to the three gardeners who were lying round the rose-tree;указывая на трёх садовников, лежавших возле розового куста;
for, you see, as they were lying on their faces,ведь, понимаете, они лежали лицом вниз,
and the pattern on their backs was the same as the rest of the pack,а рисунок на их спинах был таким же, как у остальных карт,
she could not tell whether they were gardeners,поэтому она не могла понять, кто они, садовники,
or soldiers, or courtiers, or three of her own children.солдаты, придворные или трое её собственных детей.
“How should I know?”“Откуда мне знать?”
said Alice, surprised at her own courage.сказала Алиса, удивившись собственной смелости.
“It’s no business of mine.”“Это не моё дело.”
The Queen turned crimson with fury,Королева побагровела от ярости
and, after glaring at her for a moment like a wild beast, screamed и, несколько секунд глядя на неё, как дикий зверь, закричала:
“Off with her head!“Отрубить ей голову!
Off—”Отру..."
“Nonsense!”“Чепуха!”
said Alice, very loudly and decidedly,очень громко и решительно сказала Алиса,
and the Queen was silent.и Королева замолчала.
The King laid his hand upon her arm,Король положил руку ей на плечо
and timidly said и робко сказал:
“Consider, my dear:“Подумай, дорогая:
she is only a child!”она ведь всего лишь ребёнок!”
The Queen turned angrily away from him,Королева сердито отвернулась от него
and said to the Knave и сказала Валету:
“Turn them over!”“Переверни их!”
The Knave did so, very carefully, with one foot.Валет очень осторожно сделал это одной ногой.
“Get up!”“Встать!”
said the Queen, in a shrill, loud voice,пронзительно крикнула Королева,
and the three gardeners instantly jumped up,и трое садовников мгновенно вскочили
and began bowing to the King, the Queen, the royal children, and everybody else.и принялись кланяться Королю, Королеве, королевским детям и всем остальным.
“Leave off that!”“Прекратите!”
screamed the Queen. закричала Королева.
“You make me giddy.” “От вас у меня голова кружится.”
