For a minute or two she stood looking at the house, and wondering what to do next,Минуту или две она стояла, глядя на дом и размышляя, что делать дальше,
when suddenly a footman in livery came running out of the wood —как вдруг из леса выбежал лакей в ливрее —

The Frog-Footman repeated, in the same solemn tone,Лакей-Лягушка повторил тем же торжественным тоном,
only changing the order of the words a little,лишь немного изменив порядок слов,
“From the Queen.«От Королевы.
An invitation for the Duchess to play croquet.”Приглашение для Герцогини сыграть в крокет.»
Then they both bowed low,Затем они оба низко поклонились,
and their curls got entangled together.и их завитые локоны перепутались между собой.
Alice laughed so much at this, that she had to run back into the wood for fear of their hearing her;Алиса так рассмеялась при этом, что ей пришлось убежать обратно в лес, чтобы они её не услышали;
and when she next peeped out the Fish-Footman was gone,а когда она снова выглянула, Лакей-Рыба уже исчез,

“if we had the door between us.«если бы дверь была между нами.

At this moment the door of the house opened, and a large plate came skimming out,В это мгновение дверь дома распахнулась, и большая тарелка вылетела наружу,
straight at the Footman’s head:прямо в голову Лакею:
it just grazed his nose, and broke to pieces against one of the trees behind him.она лишь слегка задела его нос и разбилась вдребезги о дерево позади него.
“—or next day, maybe,”«...или, может быть, до послезавтра,»
the Footman continued in the same tone, exactly as if nothing had happened.невозмутимо продолжил Лакей тем же тоном, словно ничего не произошло.
“How am I to get in?”«Как мне войти?»
asked Alice again, in a louder tone.снова спросила Алиса, уже громче.
“Are you to get in at all?”«А вам вообще нужно входить?»
said the Footman.сказал Лакей.
“That’s the first question, you know.”«Вот это первый вопрос, знаете ли.»
It was, no doubt:Без сомнения, это было так;
only Alice did not like to be told so.только Алисе совсем не понравилось, что ей это сказали.
“It’s really dreadful,”«Это просто ужасно,»
she muttered to herself,пробормотала она себе под нос,
“the way all the creatures argue.«как все эти существа любят спорить.
It’s enough to drive one crazy!”Так ведь и с ума можно сойти!»
The Footman seemed to think this a good opportunity for repeating his remark, with variations.Лакей, по-видимому, счёл это удачным случаем повторить своё замечание, немного изменив его.
“I shall sit here,”«Я буду сидеть здесь,»
he said,сказал он,
“on and off,«то сидя, то не сидя,

And she opened the door and went in.И она открыла дверь и вошла.
The door led right into a large kitchen,Дверь вела прямо в большую кухню,
which was full of smoke from one end to the other:до самого конца наполненную дымом:
the Duchess was sitting on a three-legged stool in the middle, nursing a baby;Герцогиня сидела посреди комнаты на трёхногом табурете, держа на руках младенца;
the cook was leaning over the fire,повар склонился над огнём,
stirring a large cauldron which seemed to be full of soup.помешивая большой котёл, который, казалось, был полон супа.
“There’s certainly too much pepper in that soup!”«В этом супе определённо слишком много перца!»
Alice said to herself,сказала про себя Алиса,
as well as she could for sneezing.насколько могла сквозь чихание.
There was certainly too much of it in the air.В воздухе его тоже было определённо слишком много.
Even the Duchess sneezed occasionally;Даже Герцогиня время от времени чихала;
and as for the baby,а что касается младенца,
it was sneezing and howling alternately without a moment’s pause. то он без остановки то чихал, то ревел, не прекращая ни на мгновение.

“It’s a Cheshire cat,”«Это Чеширский Кот,»
